Avoiding the Pitfalls of “Just Get It Done” Business and Building a “Let’s Do It Right” Culture

This is a story of how four newly-certified Jonahs embarked on a mission to change the way their company plans, prioritizes and executes, and the challenges they faced along the way. Armed with a wealth of ideas, an arsenal of TP and TOC tools and techniques, and pure determination to have TP embraced across the enterprise, our four protagonists encountered success and failure, buy-in and rejection, great finishes and false starts. Come hear about their challenges, obstacles and lessons learned (still ongoing today) in getting their company to rethink how it thinks.

Turning a Battleship in a Bath Tub
Something had to happen. For years the “Battleship” PECo stayed afloat complacent in tradition unimpeded by change. But in 1999 the perfect storm turned profits into losses and the floating fortress into the Titanic. Turning the ship around in the tradition-rich company seemed impossible. This is the story of how Process Equipment Company (PECo) teamed with AGI and not only turned the ship around, by utilizing the SDAIS process, but remains profitable during these challenging economic times.

Understanding Throughput - The Impact of Improve and Sustain
In the last eighteen months since their presentation at VELOCITY WorldSM 2008, Republic Industries International has successfully continued their journey applying the VELOCITY approach. But they faced several challenges along the way—both internally and externally. Despite their initial successes, the entire improvement effort was coming under attack as old measurements based on traditional cost accounting started to drive management back to a world where cost accounting metrics were the key to success. Republic had successfully completed the Strategy-Design-Activate phase of SDAIS (Strategy-Design-Activate-Improve-Sustain) but were unable to Improve or Sustain the system. This failure was creating conflicts that could have resulted in a complete abandonment of the Theory of Constraints (TOC).

To resolve this conflict Republic realized that they had to deepen their understanding of throughput and develop a management team that could utilize this understanding to positively affect the entire system, not just operations. It changed not only their perception of their business, but also how they would measure their performance and react to their markets.

As Republic completed the SDAIS process, the downturn in the economy threatened their very survival. More changes, and speedy responses, were needed to remain profitable. Fortunately, the stability and control provided by the TOC system architecture, when combined with the ANALYZE and MANAGE capabilities of the AGI VELOCITY SuiteTM, enabled their newly created management team to pursue and win new business opportunities and to implement a plan for success in the current and future economy.
